From its prime location at the south-east corner of Central Park, probably one of the city's most photographed sites, The Pierre, a Taj Hotel, offers a classic taste of historic New York, along with quintessential Manhattan chic. Founded in 1930, and now part of the India-based Taj luxury brand, the hotel fully epitomises the style and opulence of Grand European hotels of the Belle Époque era. Having reopened in 2009 after a $100-million renovation, The Pierre maintains its century-old tradition of lavish and exclusive hospitality.
Inside the Georgian-style building of granite and pale brick, the marble-floored chequerboard lobby is simply decorated, with fine paintings and a profusion of beautiful flower arrangements. The reception and service reflect the old-fashioned courtesy of a bygone era, the vintage wood-panelled lifts operated by white-gloved attendants who conduct you to your room, while white-gloved bellhops bring your bags - and the elite concierge team are holders of the coveted Clefs d'Or award, meaning that the standard of service is second to none. Throughout the public spaces, with their marble floors, gilded mouldings and multi-tiered chandeliers, there is an abundance of contemporary art work, including pieces from the flagship art collection in Mumbai.
The acclaimed centrepiece of The Pierre is the stunning rotunda, with its graceful double staircase, where every inch of the circular floor, curved walls and high rounded ceilings is covered with a continuous mural depicting classical mythology, created in 1967 by renowned American artist Edward Melcarth. It was originally the place where afternoon tea was served, and there are still small tables scattered around, where people can sit and talk. Equally ornate and opulent is the Grand Ballroom, accommodating 1,500 guests, with its hand-painted gold and silver ceiling.
Fine dining at The Pierre is provided by the Sirio Ristorante, where celebrated restaurateur Sirio Maccioni serves up cuisine inspired by the traditional Tuscan dishes of his youth, on polished wooden tables amid Art Deco-inspired decor. Just off the lobby is the Two E Bar and Lounge, a smart and intimate space in black, gold and olive-green tones, with original columns and mouldings, where afternoon tea is now served, as well as light meals and evening cocktails. Once a week the Two E features Claire at the Pierre, live jazz performances by the renowned Claire Khodera, making it one of Manhattan's hottest venues.
