With a personality all its own, the SLS Hotel at Beverly Hills defies every convention of luxury hospitality. Conceived by a partnership of some of the world's most creative thinkers, including global design icon Philippe Starck and top award-winning culinary genius José Andrés, the hotel is a masterpiece of innovative style and imaginative sophistication - truly a hotel like no other. The SLS name was chosen to stand for whatever you choose, but some of the hotel's own interpretations include "savour life slowly" and "such lush stays".
The hotel's distinctive character immediately becomes apparent as you walk along the red carpet to the lobby, past an outdoor area with white leather seating under illuminated resin stag antlers. Passing through the glass doors you don't see a check-in desk, but you do see a lamp with a Kalashnikov-shaped base, and a black plastic horse with a lampshade on its head. In front of the lifts there are digital oil portraits of 18th-century gentlemen that morph into monkeys, and going up in the lifts and along the landings you are accompanied by life-size figures that move with you, so you are never alone.
The buzzing hub of the hotel is Andrés' creation The Bazaar, a collection of fabulous dining and drinking experiences combined into an exciting indoor piazza design. As well as Andrés' own celebrated tapas/small plates menu, there's Bar Centro with high communal tables, and a patisserie with extraordinary chocolates and unmatched desserts, as well as a sophisticated retail space. Tres, also by José Andrés, is a more secluded restaurant with cosy alcoves and fireplaces, serving Californian food with Spanish influences, while Saam offers a fabulous 22-course tasting menu.
On the 6th floor, the Altitude Pool Deck is a glamorous oasis, offering a seductive environment of ease and relaxation. Private luxury cabanas surround an invigorating plunge pool and an elegant reflecting pool, with plush daybeds actually in the shallow water, where you can lounge and sip cooling drinks from the bar, while revelling in the amazing views over Beverly Hills. For a closer view, the safety railings round the edge are disguised by ornately framed art works and mirrors.
