Named after the most fragrant of all oriental flowers, the Saman Picca or Jasmine flower, this exquisite luxury boutique hotel boasts a superlative setting on a rocky headland, with long golden beaches on either side. Opened in 1995, the Saman Villas Resort belongs to the select Small Luxury Hotels of the World group, and has been awarded the Best Boutique Hotel in Sri Lanka accolade for three consecutive years. With its incredibly tranquil atmosphere, the only sounds being the birds and the crashing waves, the hotel is ideal for couples and honeymooners, and children under 12 are restricted to ensure seclusion and privacy.
The design of the resort is inspired by the traditions of ancient Sri Lankan temple architecture, and built with extensive use of timber, which gives the place much of its charm. The buildings are surrounded by scented gardens, backed by dense green coconut plantations, and at the centre is a beautiful infinity pool, which seems to merge into the Indian Ocean. The gardens and lawns cascade down the rock face, and offer plenty of spots for appreciating the sensational ocean views.
An outstanding feature of the Saman Villas Resort is the Sahana Spa, in the midst of tropical gardens and towering verdant forest trees. The spa's Deluxe Suite, set in a water garden, includes not only a steam shower, aromatic sauna, Jacuzzi and mud bath, but a dining pavilion and relaxation pavilion with floral bath, for a complete healing experience. Each suite has an individual music system, so treatments take place with a background of soothing music and flowing water.
The al fresco Terrace Restaurant by the pool is open for breakfast and lunch, serving an array of international dishes. On the upper level, the beautiful open-sided main restaurant is the place to enjoy fine dining in the evening, and offers a wide selection of menus from Sri Lanka, Asia and Europe. There are also two stunning bars, the Sunset Bar on the upper level, and the Pool Bar, for evening drinks.
However, at Saman Villas dining is very flexible, and there are no set times or places -- you can dine whenever and wherever you please. There is a wide choice of romantic dining locations, including right on the beach under the stars, on top of a rock, in a tropical garden, in the pool dining pavilion, or on your own private terrace. For an especially romantic and secluded spot, try the dining pavilion in the spa's water garden.
