One&Only Reethi Rah
This is a resort that can only be reached by sea-plane or sailing boat, a fact that only seems to reinforce the feeling it gives you of simply being out of this world. The One & Only Reethi Rah - Reethi Rah means "beautiful island" - is a place of sublime beauty, and of supreme and exclusive luxury, amid the natural tropical magic of the Maldives. It is a select, all-villa retreat, which offers exceptional privacy, and unrivalled pampering, style, glamour and sophistication.
The main hotel building displays a refined design in Balinese style, with space, privacy and luxury as the watchwords throughout. Visitors are enchanted as soon as they arrive at the reception area, an open pavilion resembling a Balinese palace, with a cool black polished terrazzo floor, inset with teak, and sculpted wood columns (the actual check-in has been done on board the private yacht). Other unique features include a superb black slate lap pool, built out over the ocean, and a canal constructed to allow the sea to flow through the island.
The aim in designing the restaurants for the resort was to ensure that a variety of moods were created for guests to dine in, so between them the restaurants provide an incredibly rich range of options. The main dining venue, the Reethi Restaurant, offers a theatrical experience reminiscent of a temple or a cathedral, with rich columns and spectacular settings. A floor-to-ceiling glass cube, which is the cold kitchen or Cool Box, lies at the centre, allowing the freshest of food to be prepared, and from this radiate three totally different themed seating areas, with soaring painted pillars, water features and carved columns. Behind the Cool Box is a huge wall of windows, opening on to an Asian kitchen, with two huge woks and a duck roaster.
The other restaurants offer further distinctive experiences. Fanditha, meaning "magic" in the local language, is a romantic beach restaurant, with carpets in the sand, giant cushions, white sails draped over the trees and Arabian tents suspended from palm branches, while Tapasake, an over-water Japanese restaurant on stilts, is a stylish showcase of stone, glass and stainless steel, with black terrazzo flooring. There is also the Chef's Garden, a candle-lit spot within the Chef's organic herb garden, designed for intimate dinners - meals here are fresh and healthy, with fish and vegetables, but no meat.
