There is probably nowhere in Jamaica that more epitomises the warm hospitality for which the island is famous, than this supremely elegant boutique resort. The enchanting Round Hill Hotel & Villas was built in the 1950s as a colony of cottages for the glamorous A-list celebrities of the era, and today this former pineapple plantation offers the same blend of qualities that kept the famous and fashionable coming back again and again. Understated, sophisticated and perfectly laid out, the hotel welcomes guests to a world of timeless glamour, steeped in tradition, romance and old-world graciousness.
As you arrive through the gates and drive up the steep, winding road, you are immediately aware that you are entering a world far removed from the bustle of normal life, a world both of breathtaking calm and of Caribbean charm and style. In front of the graceful colonial architecture, with pitched shingle roofs and white walls set off with green and black touches, the 100 acres of tropical flowers and stately palms cascade down the peninsula to the beautiful bay. Along the edge of the property, shallow patches of soft sand lie between gnarled tree roots and steep rocky cliffs, with a profusion of lizards, geckos and spotted yellow frogs wherever you look.
Amid the dense tropical grounds, there are tree-lined paths leading to a wealth of activities, including the luxurious spa, the water-sports hut, and the hotel's own glass-bottomed boat, for cruising over the nearby coral reefs. The most popular feature is the 24-hour infinity pool, built into the cliff edge, and glowing with red and turquoise light at night. The hotel's own organic garden is exceptionally impressive, and you can take in its splendours on one of the Head Gardener's weekly tours.
This organic garden is the origin of much of the fresh locally-sourced ingredients used in the hotel's award-winning cuisine. Dinner is either in the open air, or in the Grill, where the renowned chef prepares contemporary Caribbean cuisine in an open kitchen on a wood-fired stove, while breakfast and lunch are on the sea-front terrace beneath the sea almond trees. On Mondays there is a beach bonfire and barbecue with calypso band, for romantic dining and dancing under the stars, while on Fridays there is a Jamaican buffet on the terrace, with reggae or other live entertainment.
