The Calabash Hotel

Known as one of the great hotels of the Caribbean, this exquisite all-suite boutique hotel seems like a haven of understated English luxury. The Calabash Hotel is a tranquil exclusive retreat, with just 30 colonial-style suites set in a horseshoe formation round beautiful tropical gardens, which open on to the secluded, palm-lined beach of Prickly Bay. Managed since its inception by its English owners, the Garbutt family, it has built up an unrivalled reputation for elegance and style, combined with unmatched personal service.

One of the hotel's greatest attractions is the iconic Rhodes Restaurant, founded and run by the celebrity chef Gary Rhodes, who has personally trained the staff. Rhodes' aim from the start has been to showcase ingredients available on the island, like guava, nutmeg, barracuda, kingfish, dorado and dasheen, and his distinctive menus have been developed specifically for the hotel. Consequently the restaurant not only provides a superlative culinary experience for hotel guests, but has become one of the most popular dining venues on the island.

The restaurant has a beautiful garden terrace setting, with an abundance of trailing Thunbergia vine, attracting  hummingbirds by day, and creating a romantic atmosphere in the evening, when the grounds are lit with torches. Menus comprise lovingly crafted Caribbean and international dishes, such as shrimp and callaloo tart, or snapper in lobster sauce. The food is served to the accompaniment of live local music, which could be a pianist, or the beat of Caribbean steel drums.

Breakfast at the Calabash is always served on guests' private terrace or patio, but for lunch there is the Bash tapas restaurant right on the beach, run by English chef Mark Banthorpe, also focusing on the exciting foods and flavours of the island. For further relaxation there is the fabulous Heaven and Earth Spa, perched right on the hillside, with open-air treatment rooms overlooking the bay below, where you can unwind among waterfalls springing from the rainforest, and hot springs flowing from volcanic craters. The hotel's large pool, just beside the beach, is surrounded by Mediterranean-style coloured ceramic tiles.
