The spectacular Atlantis Bahamas complex on Paradise Island, one of the largest and most opulent resorts in the world, is described as a place not to be visited, but to be experienced. Atlantis is a resort unlike any other -- not just a group of hotels, but a fantasy playground, a mythical world of waterscapes, lagoons, marine habitats, and underwater ruins of a lost city. Its unique amenities provide endless variety and excitement, and its colossal size and iconic layout make it a sightseeing attraction in its own right.
The Atlantis complex occupies the western end of Paradise Island, which is connected to Nassau, the Bahamas capital, by a short, steep bridge. The concept is based on the myth of the lost city of Atlantis, and in fact the resort is so sprawling that it does indeed seem like a city, even if not exactly "lost". The rooms are spread across six different hotel properties, all of which form a crescent round a 141-acre water park and six marine habitat lagoons.
The facilities on offer at Atlantis can be matched by few other resorts on the planet, and as you would expect, most of these are water focused. The marine habitats include a shark lagoon, an estuary filled with starfish, and a 14-acre dolphin habitat where guests can interact directly with the dolphins. In the mammoth water-park complex, the various slides and pools are all inter-connected by a river-raft system, and at the heart of the resort is the Dig, the re-creation of the submerged city of Atlantis, set in a gigantic fish tank filled with giant sea creatures like groupers and manta rays. The 12 diverse pools include the enormous free-form Baths Pool, a Mayan Temple Pool, and a grotto pool.
The food selection at Atlantis is just as phenomenal, with up to 20 restaurants open at any given time, ranging from elegant beachfront bistros with harbour views, to delis, pizzerias and sandwich shacks. Big names include the Japanese Nobu, framed by a glowing green archway, Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill, and award-winning Casa d'Angelo, bringing together Italian and Caribbean flavours. Within the Casino is located the first Caribbean outpost of the renowned New York Olives Restaurant, providing signature Mediterranean cuisine from open kitchens and wood-burning ovens.

The Cove, exuding tropical sophistication, is unique in that it succeeds in combining exclusive upscale luxury with the most family-friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Surrounded by luxuriant water gardens full of lagoons, lakes and koi pools, and meandering wood and stone walkways, and set beside two of the world's most beautiful beaches, the hotel has exclusive access to Paradise Beach and the Cascades Pool, and easy access to all the Atlantis attractions. However, as the amenities of The Cove itself are restricted to its own guests, it has the air of a private and intimate oasis that is secluded from the resort while still being part of it.
The chic and trendy ambience is enhanced by the magnificent teak-wood open-air lobby, built in Balinese style, with alcoves filled with sinuous metal sculptures, and a row of marble water treatments, with neon lights that change colour throughout the day. Behind the hotel is Cain at the Cove, an adults-only pool and mini-Casino, exclusive to guests of The Cove and The Reef. The private Cabanas by the pool have two doors, one opening directly on to the pool, and the other on to the beach.
The Cove is a suite-only hotel, with all 600 suites featuring walk-in closets, tiered living areas, and spacious bathrooms with double vanity and separate tub and shower. All are equipped with two flat-screen HD TVs, with Bose sound system and iPod dock. Every suite has a spacious balcony overlooking the pools or the ocean.

The Reef, next door to The Cove, shares a similar air of exclusivity and luxury, but unlike The Cove it consists entirely of apartments. in fact, the lobby is reminiscent of the entrance to an opulent apartment building, with marble floors, and polished dark wood walls. The hotel is set directly on the soft white sands of Paradise Beach, and the lobby also reflects this beach-side ambience, with fishing-net chairs, and an illuminated case of driftwood by the reception desk. The guests share exclusive access to Paradise beach, Cascades Pool and Cain in the Cove with The Cove guests.
The 497 rooms at The Reef are all privately owned apartments rented out to guests, with the income shared between the owners and Atlantis, so they all have a genuinely home-like, lived-in feel and each has its individual touches. All the apartments have kitchens and private balconies with views of the ocean or pool area, and all feature elegant modern-style decor, with beach-coloured themes of beige and white accented with deeper colours like scarlet and gold. Royal Towers, with its twin flamingo-pink towers connected by a bridge, is the most iconic of the resort's six properties, and the one that most truly captures the vision of the lost city of Atlantis. For most first-time visitors, Royal Towers is the first choice of places to stay. This is not only because of the way the ambience of the property seems to encapsulate the spirit of Atlantis, but also because it offers the easiest access to most of the resort's attractions and amenities, including the water park and restaurants.
The centrepiece of the property is the Great Hall in the West Tower, with its vast rotunda featuring 8 giant murals telling the story of Atlantis, from creation to destruction. From here a grand staircase leads down to The Dig and the Ruins Lagoon, a vast under-water habitat where you can take a journey around the ruined city amidst giant sharks and rays, and brightly-coloured tropical fish. Throughout the hotel, the decor features original works of sculpture celebrating bulls (a symbol of power in Atlantis), sea-horses, and flying fish.
The 1,200 rooms are all beautifully appointed, with handsome cherry-wood furniture and tropical colour schemes. All rooms offer flat-screen TV, coffee maker and minibar. Bathrooms are spacious, with marble vanities and chrome finishings.

Coral Towers is also one of the two original hotels on the island, incorporated into the Atlantis resort in 1994. This hotel has a quieter feel than Royal Towers, but is close to much of the action, particularly the Aquaventure Water Park, as well as having its own separate park with river ride and open-air aquarium, making it an excellent choice for young families. Coral Towers has the best beach access of all the six properties, with both Atlantis Beach and Atlantis Beach West directly accessible from the guest rooms.
Because for many years Coral Towers was operated as an independent hotel, it retains the air of a more traditional Caribbean resort, unlike the theme park style of Royal Towers. The lobby, decked out in marble and mosaics, resembles an Italianate villa, with a tropical colour scheme of aqua, orange and burnt pink. The hotel has undergone several impressive renovations over the years.
The 693 recently renovated guest rooms are of the same quality as those in Royal Towers, featuring attractive cherry-wood furniture, and bathrooms with marble baths. All rooms have full balconies with chairs and tables, and all feature 32-inch LCD TV and iPod docking station. The suites have larger baths, extra balcony and sofa bed.
Measuring 28 square metres, with choice of Harbour, Terrace or Water View, 1 king-size bed or 2 queen beds, full furnished balcony.
Measuring 51 square metres (one bedroom) to 75 square metres (two bedrooms), sumptuous master bathroom, separate parlour with pull-out sofa, two full balconies.

This was one of the two original hotels on the island, incorporated into the Atlantis resort in 1994. Although it is the furthest from the central amenities of the resort, it does have access to its own lagoon and aquarium area, and the zero-entry river pool with a river raft ride, as well as being just steps from Atlantis Beach. It is also just a short distance from Marina Village, with shopping and budget restaurants that are much less expensive than the resort's own restaurants.
Measuring 25 square metres, the smallest in the resort but in all other respects virtually identical to the Royal Towers Guest Room category. Choice of Terrace or Water View. All rooms offer king-size bed or 2 queen beds, flat screen TV, marble bath, full-size furnished balcony.
