Galley Bay Resort & Spa

Tranquillity and seclusion are a major part of the appeal of the Galley Bay Resort & Spa, which has been named as one of the Caribbean's top resorts for romance. Its setting on the phenomenally beautiful west coast of Antigua, far from the crowds and other resorts of the island, and its 40 acres of glorious tropical gardens beside a perfect beach, create a totally relaxing natural setting for those who just want to escape from reality. The resort's commitment to peace and serenity means no children, and no nightlife beyond the nightly live music, with the restaurants closing around 10 p.m.

Access to the resort is via a wooden bridge, guaranteeing the minimum disruption from the outside world. The acres of luxuriant gardens are filled with coconut palms, and lie adjacent to a lovely natural lagoon and bird sanctuary that is home to pelicans, frigate birds and herons -- there is a daily fly-past of pelicans to delight the guests. The sparkling free-form pool ensures a relaxing experience, thanks to its rock landscaping, built-in cascading waterfalls, and surrounding lush palm trees.

Once you have crossed the quaint wooden bridge, you feel instantly at home amid the rustic architecture of thatch, bamboo and terracotta, reflecting the resort's Tahitian theme. Guests are welcomed with a cool drink in the quiet lobby, next to the remains of a historic sugar mill, and whisked off by golf cart to their suite or cottage. Interiors, inspired by the artist Gauguin, display a palette of natural sea-and-sand shades, with accents of tropical floral colours.

With the resort stretched out along the shoreline, there's plenty of room for varying styles of dining options. For delicious casual snacks, there's the Barefoot Grill, while the main restaurant, Sea Grape, offers both a sumptuous buffet and à la carte menus, as well as hosting a weekly Caribbean barbecue with a live steel-drum band. For romance, it's hard to beat The Gauguin, where you dine by candlelight in your own private cabana among the palm trees, on menus which combine cuisines from the Caribbean, Pacific Rim and Mediterranean. Right at the end of the beach, Ismay's, open for dinner only, serves authentic Caribbean cuisine in a stunning open-sided timber building.

Given the hotel's primary focus on relaxation and pampering, it's not surprising that the luxurious Indulge Spa is a central feature. In a secluded spot overlooking the lagoon, it is styled to match the Gauguin cottages, and features three raised open-air treatment pods -- rustic wooden huts, at branch height among the trees -- one of which is designed for couple massages. The cabanas are rough-hewn, airy massage decks, draped with sheer white curtains, and offer delectable exotic treatments, including the Tropical Harmony massage, with papaya-pineapple crème fraiche exfoliation and wraps.
